The ILI Building: well situated easy access to the city. The building has recently been completely refurbished and air-conditioned and offers excellent facilities to the students.
The Institute is situated in Central Cairo on the west bank of the Nile just a 10 minute "taxi" ride to Tahrir Square (downtown Cairo ). Cairo is a great metropolis of some 17 million people the largest city in Africa and the Middle East.
Egyptian Colloquial Arabic is the dialect spoken in Cairo and although English is understood it can be an advantage (also appreciated) if you can use Arabic in everyday life. Egyptian people are extremely warm and friendly and will go out of their way to help you. The culture is rich and interesting so there is plenty to do at weekends
VISA requirements inside the EEC : you require a 1 month Tourist Visa only which can be obtained from your local Egyptian Embassy or on arrival at Cairo Airport (the stamps are purchased from a bank kiosk thereafter Visas can be extended). Thereafter Visas can be extended.
VISA requirements outside the EEC : you MUST check with the Egyptian Embassy in your own home country. All students should applay for tourist visas. Extending your one-month visa: Most nationalities should not experience any difficulties in extending their visa.
School Hours: ILI is closed on Friday and Saturday. This does not effect the airport meeting services and hotel bookings. Classes are held on Monday to Thursday. Class times are usually 9-11 am 11.30-2.00pm 2.30-5.00pm and 5.00-7.00pm depending on which course you are enrolled. During break times the Institute has a good restaurant and an Internet Café both of which you are welcome to use at any time.
Courses begin every 4-5 weeks and students progress through the levels on a monthly basis. All students are level tested on the first day of the course.
Medical: You do NOT need yellow fever or Cholera vaccunations but we suggest you are up-to-date with typhoid, tetanus, polio and hepatitis. Whilst ther are irritating mosquitoes in Cairo you don't have to take malaria tablets.
Culture: As Egypt is predominately a Muslim country it is important to respect its customs - in particular its dress code. This particularly concerns women who should dress modestly and not wear shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops. Although conservative Cairo is also very cosmopolitan allowing alcohol nightclubs disco and a huge range of cheap to expensive clubs and restaurants.
