Miguel Angel Asturias Spanish School named after Guatemala's Nobel Prize-winning novelist is a non-profit Spanish school operated by a collective of experienced teachers in Quetzaltenango Guatemala. It is oriented towards excellence in speaking and understanding spoken Spanish. It also seeks to impart an awareness of the social political and cultural realities of Guatemala and Latin America.
Individual one-on-one instruction for five hours a day is the ideal way to learn a foreign language! Using our interactive immersion method, you'll speak for hours a day instead of for a few minutes. Inhibitions are quickly lost, and you'll make vast progress in a short amount of time. In addition to learning the language, you'll also learn about the realities of life in Guatemala and Latin America, taking away a deeper understanding of this part of the world.
Teaching
Each week you'll get a new teacher, to experience different teaching styles and to talk about different topics. If you wish though, you may also choose to continue with the same teacher. Every Monday, your teacher will assess your strengths and needs, and together you'll devise a lesson plan for the week. And on Friday, you'll assess the progress that you've made.
Our teachers are among the best available! With years of experience using the one-on-one immersion method, they are experts at helping you to learn Spanish rapidly, while making class fun and enjoyable. Having a broad array of specialties and experiences, each one has a unique perspective to lend to in-class discussions of a wide range of topics. All our teachers are university students or graduates, have completed our own teacher training program, and have completed or are attending the Spanish teacher certificate program of the University of San Carlos, Guatemala.
Quetzaltenango aka Xela
Quetzaltenango (or Xela "shay-la," as the locals call it, short for its original Mayan name Xelaju) is a beautiful city located in a mountain valley at an elevation of about 7,500 feet (2,300 meters). Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, the views are breathtaking! The city itself is a blend of the new alongside the old - there's still many colonial buildings, some of adobe mud construction, and cobblestone streets. From the central bus terminal, there are numerous buses departing to virtually every other part of Guatemala. As a center of commerce and culture, Xela is ideal both for learning Spanish and for the possibilities it offers for students who wish to work on volunteer projects. Quetzaltenango (aka Xela, pronounced "shay-la"), Guatemala is the ideal place to learn Spanish! The Spanish is clearly spoken, and universally accepted as ideal Latin American Spanish.
