Welcome to the English as a Second Language Institute of New College of California. Your new language and your understanding of American culture can open new doors for you in this country and abroad. In the last twenty years the ESL Institute has helped over 5 000 students learn English. Almost all of the students who have completed the Advanced levels have been accepted by community colleges or universities. We feel this high acceptance rate is due in large to the excellent teaching and the strong intensive program. The cost of your education at the Institute will be very modest compared with that of other schools. Nevertheless you or your relatives or sponsors will be spending that money so that you can become proficient in English and it would be very disappointing if you failed in your purpose. Therefore you must be willing to work hard so that you learn English as quickly as you can. This requires a promise from you to spend the time and energy to succeed. Many of our graduates will enter a community college such as College of San Mateo or a four year college or university such as Notre Dame or San Francisco State after studying at the Institute. Some will return home to use English skills in the international business forum. Whatever your plans we at the Institute-the staff and teachers-will do everything we can to help you. Location/Climate
The ESL Institute is located in Millbrae a quiet residential neighborhood just 20 kilometers south of San Francisco. Millbrae is known as "The Place in the Sun". It is just west of the San Francisco International Airport and situated next to the lovely city of Burlingame. Millbrae enjoys a pleasant moderate climate with short mild winters and warm sunny summers.

Transportation
The transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area is excellent. Buses trains and Bay area Rapid Transit provide convenient access to shopping centers libraries and tourist sites. Host families are within 20 minutes of the school either by walking or taking a single train or bus.

The Institute has classes year-round each 11-week quarter beginning in early January late March mid-June and late-September. Classes are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am to 1:15 on Fridays. We have continuous enrollment meaning a student can start studying here at any time of the year. Classes are small allowing for much individual attention for each student. There is an average of 10 students per class with no more than 16 in any core class.

Level 1: Low Beginning
Level 2: High Beginning
Level 3: Low Intermediate
Level 4: High Intermediate
Level 5: Advanced
Level 6: High Advanced

The Multimedia Learning Center enables students to work at their own pace and practice their English skills through computer-assisted instruction. Both the Macintosh and the IBM environments allow students to practice and improve grammar listening comprehension vocabulary writing idioms and pronunciation. Students have fast and easy access to the Internet and there are many computer programs CD-Roms audio tapes and videos in the Learning Center which is open during the following hours :
